Good to know

How it is calculated.

01

A basis

The highest of the price paid, the price stated in the deed and the assessed value multiplied by the city's comparative factor.

02

Brackets

0.5%, 1%, then 1.5% everywhere in Quebec. Above $500,000, a city may set a higher rate: up to 3%, and up to 4% in Montréal.

03

A bill

The municipality bills the duties after the sale. The brackets change every year on January 1.

Exemptions

Sometimes, no duties.

The law provides exemptions, notably in these cases:

First home

Tax credits.

$5,875
